Stanford beats California 196.175 to 194.725
Stanford had a little bit of trouble on vault and floor and their numbers just aren’t where they need them at this point, but they still finished respectably with a 196.175 to California’s 194.725.
On vault they did well but just aren’t hitting the landings the way they need to. Ivana Hong did have a nice FTY for a 9.825, and Nicole Dayton was the team’s high scorer with a 9.875, taking the title. Bars was SOLID with a 9.825 the lowest to count; compared to their vault, their bars is pretty much Championships-ready! Their best here was Nicole Pechanec, who scored a 9.925 taking the title. Beam wasn’t the best, with most scores in the 9.7 range, but Hong and Shona Morgan stood out with lovely and strong routines, each taking a 9.9 to share the title. Floor wasn’t terrible, but Jenny Peter did have some issues, getting a 9.55, so they had to count a bunch of 9.7-range scores once again, and their highest to count was only a 9.85 from Pauline Hanset, who took the title here. Ashley Morgan was the only Card to compete in the All Around, where she took first place with her 39.175.
California doesn’t have huge scores but they’re pretty consistent across the board, scoring between a 48.625 and a 48.725 on each event. Mariesah Pierce and Madisyn O’Brien had the top vault scores, each taking a 9.8, tying for third on this event. They performed a little better on bars, despite a fall from Pierce. O’Brien’s 9.8 was the highest here (sixth place). Beam was also a good event for them, matching their 48.725 from bars. Carol Chang fell but the rest of the team kept it together, and Nicolette Lew came through with a nice 9.85 for third place. They had a fall on floor from Crystal Paz, but once again were able to get it together; Pierce was able to recover from her bars fall and she scored a 9.825 here, which was good enough for second place. Pierce was also the only Cal athlete to compete in the All Around, where she earned a 38.5.
