UCLA takes first at IGI Chicago Style with 196.85
UCLA easily won the first place spot at the IGI Chicago Style NCAA meet held on Chicago’s Navy Pier last night. While they suffered slightly on a few events and top performers threw less than stellar routines, they still managed to come out on top with a 196.85. Boise State came in second with a 196.025, followed by Missouri in third with a 195.525 and Illinois (Champaign) in fourth with a 195.1.
UCLA started out strong on vault, with most athletes posting 9.825s. Tauny Frattone was a standout, earning a 9.85, but Olivia Courtney, who has been sick with the flu and hasn’t been either competing or up to par in the past couple of weeks, stuck her FTY for a 9.925, taking first on the event. Sam Peszek struggled slightly on bars, earning only a 9.775. Vanessa Zamarripa only competed bars, hitting for a 9.875, and Courtney once again came out on top with a 9.9. The Bruins struggled a bit on beam; after mistakes from Peszek and Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs, Mattie Larson came out and had the top routine with a 9.85. Floor was the best routine for the Bruins, as they posted a 49.35 total after especially good routines from Lichelle Wong and Hopfner-Hibbs (a 9.875 each); Alyssa Pritchett managed to shock as she took the title with her 9.9 after a beautiful performance. Peszek took second in the All Around with a 39.275, her lowest of the season after lower energy performances than normal across the board.
Boise State’s best event was vault, on which they scored a 49.2 with a 9.8 the lowest to count. Their top performer was Amy Glass, who earned a tie in second place with a 9.875. Bars was also decent, as they had mostly 9.8 range scores; Kelsey Morris’ high 9.875 was the team’s best, earning her a third place spot on the event. They faltered a bit on beam, counting mostly 9.7 range scores, though Lindsay Kazandjian and Brittany Potvin-Green each earned 9.8s, tying them with several other athletes for third place. Potvin-Green unfortunately fell on floor, though the rest of the scores to count were 9.7s and 9.8s, with Glass’ 9.85 (fifth place) the team’s highest here. Glass took third in the All Around with a 39.225; Potvin-Green came in sixth with a 38.375, a very low score for her after losing about a point on floor.
Missouri also performed at their best on vault, with a few scores on the low side, though Mary Burke had a fantastic FTY for a 9.875, tying for second. The team did well on bars, counting mostly mid-9.7 scores, though Burke stood out again with a 9.9, tying UCLA’s Courtney for first. Beam was slightly rough, with Tori Howard’s 9.775 (eighth place) the highest here. They picked up steam again on floor, with all hit routines, and Burke once again taking the top spot with her 9.85 (fifth place). Burke, who had quite the competition, took first in the All Around with a total of 39.375.
Illinois struggled on vault with mostly 9.6-9.7 scores. Powerhouse Alina Weinstein took the top spot for the team with her 9.825 (eighth place). They picked up on bars with no falls but again mostly 9.7 range scores counting, though Weinstein once again hit for a 9.825 (fifth place). The team performed similarly on beam, again with no falls but all 9.7 range scores aside from Weinstein’s 9.8, putting her in the big tie for third place. Though Elise Gill fell on floor, the team didn’t need to count it. They did count some 9.6-9.7 range scores, but Amber See had a fantastic performance for a 9.875, tying for second on the apparatus. Weinstein came in fourth in the All Around with a 39.175, closely followed by Kelsey Joannides in fifth with a 38.975.
